Why is Basic-D the world's most sold braille embosser?

Basic-D V5
The Index Braille Basic model has been a favorite among Braille users since the 1980's. Basic has had a journey offering different functionalities, but always maintaining its modern attire for its times.

Embossing Braille is effortless with this tractor-fed Braille embosser. The fan-folded paper is found to be the most reliable, and most commonly used paper style for Braille embossers.

Throughout the past 25+ years on its journey, Basic-D has earned its position as the single most sold Braille embosser worldwide. Over 10,000 Basic-D embossers have been sold and we are not planning on stopping there.
Now available is the Basic-D V5!

Easy-to-build

"In order to understand something really and truly well, you must know where it came from. There is no other way to appreciate its value." -Karen Hawkins

Changes in the production process- Basic-D V5 takes approximately 1 hour to build from scratch. This is because Index changed the entire production with the introduction of V4 in 2011.

One of the key elements was to eliminate all lifts and unnecessary transports between different workstations (this is seen in the above video). When the production of the Basic underwent an analysis from a lean production perspective it turned out that each Basic unit (V3 model) was lifted seven to eight times plus moved around the premises an additional five times. There was also a lot of running to fetch components as well. The result was zero lifts and no transport with all parts and components available within an arms length away. This has proved to be not only time saving but also good from a work environment perspective.

With a Lean production facility we are able to accommodate for large orders in a reasonable amount of time. For three consecutive years Index produced and shipped 1,500 Basic-D embossers to Brazilian schools in a matter of months.

Complete embosser re-design- Based on customer feedback and production and service experiences from previous versions, several changes have been made to components and features. The Basic-D V5 is physically very similar to the V4 model but with a number of new exciting features.

Easy-to-use

The user interface (control panel) allows you to interact with the Braille embosser and provides complete embosser control. From the control panel you can: Synthetic speech feedback is available in several languages and will help guide you when using the user interface.

Modern technology

In today's world we can now use mobile devices for many of the tasks that once required computers. With this in mind, we have made the Index V5 embosser line compatible with portable devices such as smart phones and tablets.

With a Wi-Fi connection and a portable device with a modern browser, you are able to emboss Braille from smart phones and tablets. The combination of a Wi-Fi connection and Index-direct-Braille (idB) mobile printing is made possible. idB also enables Braille embossing without the need of a separate Braille editor. All Braille documents are embossed using the latest dot-forming technology.
