Release Notes - Firmware V5: 2019-05-29 

Highlights

Firmware V5: 2019-05-29 includes:

Several new important features for the BrailleApp.
  • The BrailleApp now uses its own liblouis-engine. This allows for several important improvements.
    • ​It is now possible to back-translate a document after editing it.
    • The document translation now takes place on the computer running the BrailleApp, which off-loads work from the embosser.
  • The BrailleApp now has an accessible GUI wizard for editing layouts
  • ​Support for reading liblouis braille text, by a screen reader, has now been added.
  • Added support for eight dot braille editing in preview
  • liblouis 3.9.0 is used by the BrailleApp
  • A new and improved version of the ipf file format has been created.
  • Additional information is now shown for the text to braille translation tables.
  • To improve the compatibility with the JAWS screen-reader, the BrailleApp now presents itself to the screen-readers as an application. As a side effect the NVDA screen-reader requires the user to manually switch to browse mode by using the NVDA + space keys combination in order to have full verbosity.
Improvments to the embosser.
  • Liblouis 3.9.0 is now used for the text-to-braille translation.
  • The embosser is now in "busy-mode" when the BrailleApp is used to change layouts. It is not possible to use the keyboard when the embosser is in "busy-mode".

Hotfix 2019-07-05:

  • Fixed problem that caused the Japanese "Extra"-translation engine to fail.

Hotfix 2019-07-03:

  • Fixed problem that caused the current layout to be changed when the printer was restarted for Basic-d models.
  • Improved search for printing head reference point for FanFold-D. Also added new user menu for easy adjustment of alignment between the printer heads for FanFold-D
    • The new menu is accessed in the following way: Menu --> "User service" --> "Braille Adjustment" --> "Wizard for Braille line alignment"
      In this wizard it is possible to set the distance from wall for each printer head in increments of about 0.15 mm and to print out a test page to check the alignment. When the user is satisfied with the alignment he/she can save the new adjustment in the wizard.
      • Since this change affects the slave processors in the printer. The embosser will program these slave processors. During this period the embosser will say "programming print processor #".
  • Fixed a problem that caused uploaded user defined tables to appear in the edit layout wizard list only after a embosser restart.
  • Fixed distributor default layouts for several distributors for several paper types and liblouis tables.
 

Known Issues affecting the BrailleApp (will be fixed in later release)

  • Documents larger than 4MB results in an error from the uploader

    • ​If you click on the printer icon it will show status and progress
  • It is now possible to change WiFi settings for the WiFi connection. 
    • ​E.g., you can now set a static IP address for the WiFi connection.
  • ​Improved handling of dxb files.
    • ​The Braille App will warn if the formating parameters of the document are in conflict with the paper in the embosser.

  • Improved error message handling if a firmware update from network fails.
    • The printer will say that there is no connection to the Index Braille network
  • ​The Chinese segmentation algorithm has been improved.
  • WiFi can now be powered down from the Embosser.
    • The Braille App will show a warning to make sure that the user doesn't accidentally disconnect.

Several new important features for the BrailleApp.
  • User Account selection and management has now been added.
    • ​It is now possible to select 2 different roles: user and admin/service
      • ​Users can print and edit documents but not change any settings
      • admin/service can change all modifiable settings in the BrailleApp.
      • ​It is also possible to set login rules and password settings.
  • Label Printing is now supported in the BrailleApp
    • ​It is now possible to print and create lables in user friendly manner.
    • Labels that have been created can be saved as an .ipf
    • The BrailleApp now allows you to continue editing a label if you navigate from the label page.
    • The BrailleApp can now create labels with rotated text
  • ​User defined Text-to-Braille-Translation tables can now be added.
    • It is now possible to add your own 6- or 8-dot table to translate text to braille. Index Braille uses the tables from the liblouis open source project. You can now add a new table of your own making to test it before adding the table to the liblouis project.
  • Wired network settings can now be configure in the BrailleApp (e.g., setting a fixed IP-address).
  • Keyboard access warning. The BrailleApp now notifies you when changes are being made to the embosser via the menu from the embosser keyboard.
    • ​This avoids accidentally changing parameters while someone is accessing the menu of the embosser.
    • ​The BrailleApp will now update its layouts if a change is made using the keyboard on the embosser.
  • New editing, printing and preview functionality
    • You can now save and directly print Index Print Files (.ipf)
      • ​Index Print Files (.ipf) is the format that the Braille App uses to save files. The format is obfuscated to increase security.
    • The BrailleApp now supports reading duxbury files (.dxb) and (.ebf). The read file can then be previewed, edited and saved as and Index Print File (.ipf)
    • You can now insert page breaks when editing files.
    • To avoid accidentally editing a preview, you must now select the pen icon to initate editing
    • You can now set the range of pages that you wish to print
    • .brl files are now supported by the BrailleApp
    • Floating page graphics can now be previewed in the BrailleApp.
  • You can now see the meta information about the text-to-braille-translation table that you are using. I.e., source file, language, grade, 6- or 8-dot, ...
  • The Braille App Layout view now contains information about the creator of the layout​
Improvments to the embosser.
  • Chinese word segementation has been added to the IdB conversion process for the Chineses language
  • Liblouis 3.7.0 is now used for the text-to-braille translation.
  • It is now possible to start bluetooth from the embossers menu (via the keyboard)
  • Bluetooth is now off by default.
  • The embosser now also uses speech to notify when an update is available from the internet.

  • A4 paper handling in BrailleBox V5.
    • BrailleBox V5 now supports A4 paper (Region: Europe).
  • Support for calibration of braille cell alignment by distributors.
  • Support for calibration of the linear actuator (door opener) for BrailleBox V5.
    • To activate the calibration wizard please press and hold the door button until you hear a single beep. The wizard will then talk you through the process of calibrating the linear actuator (door). 
  • Support for Liblouis release 3.3.0.
  • Added tactile view demofiles.
  • Better handling of print processor programming when changing PCB cards.
  • Support for hammer batch 1808/1809
 

New Functionality and Improvements

  • Support for A4 paper in BrailleBox V5. With this beta firmware update, the BrailleBox V5 now supports fast paper loading for A4 together with the previously available: A3, Tabloid (11"x17"), 11.5"x11" and B4.
    • Please note that A4 must be loaded as landscape in the braille tray of the BrailleBox.
  • Support for calibration of braill cell alignment by distributors via the menu of the embosser. Distributors can now easily calibrate alignment problems using the "wizard for delay time for solenoid" and the "wizard for step length for embossing head".
  • Support for linear actuator (door) calibration on BrailleBox V5. Some BrailleBox V5 units have had problems when closing the door, resulting in the door stopping early. One of the main causes of this problem was the maximum allowed current draw for the linear actuator was set too low. The new calibration routine will enable the correct current draw value to be set, reducing the risk for door problems.
    • To activate the calibration wizard please press and hold the door button until you hear a single beep. The wizard will then talk you through the process of calibrating the linear actuator (door).
  • ​Support for Liblouis release 3.3.0. Will allow distributors to use the new Liblouis format.

New Functionality and Improvements

  • The wizard for fine tuning of alignment can be used in the case where the printout shows problems with one or a few specific columns through out the entire page. The dots in the characters of the column many either be spaced too tightly or spaced too widely. Please note, that in the case of sideways printing (e.g., Booklet, sideways z-folding, A4-Portrait-Landscape, ...) the problem will appear on one or a few specific rows (not columns).
  • Replacing the PCB (Arm7 slave processor) in an embosser with a newer PCB (m4 slave processor), will now automatically reprogram the slave processor with the correct m4-firmware. Previously a special command file had to be sent to the embosser to initiate the programming of the m4-processor.
  • Added tactile view demofiles. The demo files can be found under the print menu --> print demo files.

    • It is now possible to save networks that you have registered to using wps, avoiding having to use wps again. Thereby speeding up the process of connecting to already registered/known networks. Using the menu system from the keyboard allows you to:

      • Disconnect from network.
      • Register to network using wps.
      • Forget registered networks.

  • Distributor specific layouts. In cooperation with our distributors we have now added distributor specific layouts, reducing the need for creating your own custom layouts. The following distributors have added default layouts that can be easily selected.
